“To be trained in a certain style and then be professionally asked to do a whole completely different style [because of my race]—it’s not like all of the other students have to focus on Motown, but that’s what I have to focus on. And this whole Rebecca Naomi Jones in Oklahoma! or Audra McDonald, that’s a more rare—or newer— occurrence. There definitely was a wide learning gap.”
