“There’s a lot of reasons to be stressed about the theatre landscape that are about finances and about how theatres are gonna survive this moment, but I think there are a lot of reasons to be scared that are about how playwrights, composers, librettists, lyricists—how they’re going to be nurtured if there are no pipelines that aren’t commercial pipelines. I’m like how on earth do we have good, challenging work? I just don’t know. I think the good, challenging work, it comes from you being brave, and being brave as a writer is really freaking hard. You need those people who say, ‘You can do it.’”
This week we welcome playwright, screenwriter, and former President of the Library Club, C.A. Johnson! We chat about the differences between collaboration for theatre versus television, how capitalism influences theatremaking, and what it was like seeing her play All The Natalie Portmans go from page to stage.
